Supabase + OpenAI Integration Guide

Supabase and OpenAI form one of the most powerful combinations in modern app development. Supabase's pgvector extension turns your PostgreSQL database into a vector store for semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), while OpenAI's embeddings and chat completions APIs power the AI layer. Together they enable AI features that are grounded in your own data.

Why Supabase + OpenAI?

Supabase's pgvector extension stores and queries high-dimensional vectors — the embeddings that OpenAI generates for text. This enables semantic search (find documents by meaning, not keywords), RAG (give GPT context from your database before answering), and recommendation systems. Because it's just PostgreSQL, you can combine vector search with standard SQL filters, joins, and RLS policies — a combination that purpose-built vector databases can't match.

Setting up the integration

Enable the pgvector extension in Supabase: CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS vector. Create a table with a vector(1536) column (for OpenAI's text-embedding-3-small model). Write a Supabase edge function that accepts text, calls OpenAI's embeddings API, and stores the result in your table. For search, create a Supabase RPC function (match_documents) that uses the <=> cosine similarity operator to find the nearest neighbours to a query embedding.

Building RAG applications

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) uses your Supabase vector store to give GPT relevant context before answering user questions. The flow: user submits a question → your edge function generates an embedding for the question → queries pgvector for the k most similar documents → prepends those documents to the GPT prompt as context → returns GPT's answer. This grounds the AI in your actual data and dramatically reduces hallucinations.

Real-world use cases

Supabase + OpenAI powers: customer support chatbots trained on documentation (RAG), semantic search across large content libraries, AI-powered onboarding that answers questions about your product, code review tools that retrieve similar past bugs, and personalisation engines that recommend content based on user history embeddings. App Studio has built RAG-powered support bots for SaaS clients that reduced support ticket volume by 40%.

Common pitfalls

Generating embeddings for every row at query time is slow and expensive — pre-compute and store embeddings when data is inserted or updated using a Supabase edge function triggered by a database webhook. Index your vector column with an IVFFlat or HNSW index for large datasets (over 100K rows) — without an index, pgvector does a full table scan. Always store the original text alongside the embedding so you can return it to the user. Monitor OpenAI embedding costs: bulk embedding large corpora can be surprisingly expensive.
